Dynamic mechanical properties of jointed soft rock samples subjected to cyclic triaxial loading: a FEM-DEM-based study

Abstract In order to investigate the fatigue behavior of jointed soft rock samples with different joint dip angles, cyclic triaxial tests under stress amplitudes and confining pressures were numerically simulated using combined finite-discrete element method (FEM-DEM). The dynamic strength deformation rules revealed, including masing effect, ratcheting volumetric strain properties failure modes influenced by angles. During first hysteresis loop, nonlinearity loading curve is much stronger than that in subsequent cycles, damage are almost most, which demonstrates effect history on subjected great, especially cycle. When applied static maximum deviatoric same, vertical compressive case found be lower case, tensile exists some local position, may reason why cracks can increase propagate gradually when strength.
